Applications of Laser pointers

Pointing

Laser pointers are often used in educational and business presentations and visual demonstrations as an eye-catching pointing device. Red laser pointers can be used in almost any indoor or low-light situation where pointing out details by hand may be inconvenient, such as in construction work or interior decorating. Green laser pointers can be used for similar purposes as well as outdoors in daylight or for longer distances.
Laser pointers are used in a wide range of applications. Green laser pointers can also be used for amateur astronomy. On a moonless night, a green laser pointer beam can often be clearly seen, allowing someone to accurately point out individual stars to others nearby. Also, these green laser pointers are commonly used by astronomers worldwide at star parties or for conducting lectures in astronomy. Astronomy laser pointers are also commonly mounted on telescopes in order to align the telescope to a specific star or location. Laser alignment is much easier than aligning through using the eyepiece.[11]

[edit]Industrial and research use

Laser pointers are used in industry. For instance, construction companies may use high quality laser pointers to enhance the accuracy of showing specific distances, while working on large-scale projects. They proved to be useful in this type of business because of their accuracy, which made them significant time-savers. What is essentially a laser pointer may be built into an infrared thermometer to identify where it is pointing, or be part of a laser level or other apparatus.
They may also be helpful in scientific research in fields such as photonicschemistryphysics, and medicine.[citation needed]

[edit]Leisure and entertainment

Entertainment is one of the other applications that have been found for lasers. The most common use of lasers in entertainment can be seen in special effects used in laser shows. Clubs, parties and outdoor concerts all use high-power lasers, with safety precautions, as a spectacle.[12] Laser shows are often extravagant, using lensesmirrors andsmoke.
However, laser pointers have few applications beyond actual pointing in the wider entertainment industry, and many venues ban entry to those in possession of pointers as a potential hazard. Very occasionally laser gloves, which are sometimes mistaken for pointers, are seen being worn by professional dancers on stage at shows. Unlike pointers, these usually produce low-power highly divergent beams to ensure eye safety. On one or two occasions pointers have been used as props by magicians during magic shows.
As an example of the potential dangers of laser pointers brought in by audience members, at the Tomorrow Land Festival in Belgium in 2009, laser pointers brought in by members of the audience of 200 mW or greater were found to be the cause of eye damage suffered by several other members of the audience according to reports about the incident filed on the ILDA (International Laser Display Association's) Web site:.[13] The report says that the incident was investigated by several independent authorities, including the Belgium police, and that those authorities concluded that pointers brought in by the audience were the cause of the injuries.
Laser pointers can be used in hiking or outdoor activities. Higher-powered laser pointers are bright enough to scare away large wild animals which makes them useful for hiking and camping.[citation needed] In these circumstances a laser pointer can also serve as a handy survival tool, as it can be used as a rescue signal in emergencies which is visible to aircraft and other parties, during both day and night conditions, at extreme distances. For example, during the night in August 2010 two men and a boy were rescued from marshland after their red laser pen was spotted by rescue teams.[14]
Housecats are attracted to the motion of a dot produced by a laser pointer, and cheap low-powered laser pointers are often sold and used as cat toys.

[edit]Weapons systems

Accurately aligned laser pointers are used as laser gunsights to aim a firearm.
Some militaries use lasers to mark targets at night for aircraft. This is done to ensure that "friendly" and "enemy" targets are not mistaken. A friendly target may wear an IR emitting device that is only visible to those utilizing night vision (such as pilots.) To pinpoint the exact location of an enemy combatant, they would simply illuminate the target with a laser beam detectable by the attacking aircraft. This can be one of the most accurate ways of marking targets.[15]

New Hampshire primary: Republicans face voters' verdict

New Hampshire voters are picking a Republican presidential candidate as the US state hosts the first primary of this year's election season.
Eve-of-vote opinion polls showed Mitt Romney's big lead shrinking slightly as rivals savaged his business record.
Jon Huntsman, who has all but staked his entire candidacy on Tuesday's vote, was competing for second place with Ron Paul, according to pollsters.
The eventual nominee will challenge President Barack Obama in November.
Primaries and caucuses will be held in every US state over the next few months to choose a Republican candidate before the eventual winner is crowned at the party convention in August.
Romney under fire
New Hampshire is expected to give former Massachusetts Governor Romney his second victory, after he was declared the winner over Rick Santorum by the slimmest of margins in last week's Iowa caucuses.
Most polls open at 07:00 (12:00 GMT) and close at 20:00 local time.
But the tiny community of Dixville Notch enjoyed its quadrennial moment in the political spotlight by voting at midnight, with all of nine registered voters casting ballots.
Among the Republicans, Mr Romney and Mr Huntsman were tied on two votes each, with Barack Obama winning three Democratic votes.
Two opinion polls on Monday from the small New England state showed Mr Romney's lead clipped to between 13 and 17 percentage points ahead of his nearest rival, Texas Congressman Paul.
Former Pennsylvania Senator Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are vying for conservative votes, with one eye on a primary later this month in South Carolina, where the other contenders hope to halt Mr Romney's momentum.
Mr Romney unwittingly gave ammunition to his rivals on Monday in an off-the-cuff mark while telling business leaders how he wanted consumers to pick and choose private health insurers.
"If you don't like what they do, you can fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me," said Mr Romney, who is under attack over his leadership of a private equity firm, Bain Capital.
Mr Huntsman, the former governor of Utah and onetime US ambassador to China, pounced.
"Governor Romney enjoys firing people; I enjoy creating jobs," he said.Texas Governor Rick Perry - who has skipped campaigning in New Hampshire to try to revive his flagging candidacy in South Carolina - attacked Mr Romney over his remark at the weekend that he knew was it was like to fear a "pink slip", or being fired.
"I have no doubt that Mitt Romney was worried about pink slips, whether he was going to have enough of them to hand out," Mr Perry said on Monday.
Mr Gingrich's supporters, meanwhile, unveiled a short film, When Mitt Came To Town, portraying Mr Romney as a greedy "corporate raider" who destroyed the lives of American families.
The pro-Gingrich group, Winning Our Future, is poised to spend $3.4m (£2.2m) on TV advertising in South Carolina after the New Hampshire vote.
Mr Romney has repelled the attacks, claiming he helped to create more than 100,000 jobs during his time at Bain Capital.
He casts himself as a job creator who can turn around the US economy at a time when the unemployment rate is 8.5%.
President Obama is seeking re-election amid voter concern at the pace of economic recovery from the recession that started in 2007 during the White House tenure of George W Bush and ended in 2009.

Instruction:

A laser pointer is a small laser designed to highlight something of interest by projecting a small bright spot of colored light onto it. The laser beam is not in itself visible from the side, but is visible as a result of light scattered by dust particles along the beam path. The small width of the beam and low power of typical laser pointers make the beam itself invisible in a reasonably clean atmosphere, showing a point of light when striking an opaque surface. Some higher powered laser pointers are faintly visible via Rayleigh scattering when viewed in moderately to dimly lit conditions.
NOTE:
  • The laser can be bright enough when you light it in normal temperature, so you had better not light it continually over 30 seconds
  • Avoid direct eye exposure to laser beam (any contact to the human eye can cause permanent damage). Never expose your eyes or anyone else's to the laser beam
  • Please put it away from children to avoid the danger by contacting. When do not use it, please take off the battery from the laser in order to avoid the damage by the children's contacting
  • In some countries these laser pointers (especially the higher powered ones) may be illegal to own and/or use. Safety Considerations:
Laser pointers are effective tools when used properly. The following considerations should be observed when using laser pointers:
  • Never look directly into the laser beam
  • Never point a laser beam at a person
  • Do not aim the laser at reflective surfaces
  • Never view a laser pointer using an optical instrument, such as binocular or a microscope
  • Do not allow children to use laser pointers unless under the supervision of an adult
How to Build a Scanning Laser Light Show:
  • Choose a laser array system. Most small systems run anywhere from $300-$1000 depending on all of the features that you would like. The most popular feature on these systems is the ability to have the laser react to audio cues. A small microphone built into the laser array will pick up the sound in the room and react accordingly
  • Mount the array above the stage or at the back of the venue/nightclub. Most small arrays come with an adjustable handle that has a a C-mount attached to it. The C-mount can hook on to anything that you can fit around. Once you have chosen a location, turn the locking screw on top of the mount to tighten it down to whatever object you have chosen. Luckily, these arrays are very lightweight so finding a sturdy object to mount them to is fairly simple. A speaker stand or tall microphone stand will work as well
  • Consult the manufactures instruction manual to determine the dip-switch settings for automatic "audio mode". A series of dip-switches on the rear of these units allows you to assign them to a certain channel by changing the order of the switches when using them in conjunction with a larger DMX system. Setting these dip-switches a certain way will tell the unit that it is being used automatically
  • Turn on the laser array
  • Play music in the room with the laser array and enjoy the show
How to Set Projector Distances:
When setting up a home theater projector (or even an old film projector), there are a number of factors to consider in determining how far the projector should be from the projection surface. The amount of ambient light in the room plays a big role in how far you can set your projector from the screen. The reflectivity of that surface is also a factor. The size of the picture you want is also something to consider, but it is limited by the light conditions, brightness, projector resolution, and the physical constraints of the theater room. Finally, it is important to consider where you want to sit in the projection room, so that you have a good viewing angle and your head doesn't block the image

  • Darken your projection room to match the lighting conditions when you will do most of your viewing. That way you can optimize your setup for best picture quality during the time of day or night that you will use it most
  • Arrange your seating so that it faces the screen. Make sure the seats are in roughly the spot where you want to do your viewing
  • Mark out a rectangle on the wall with masking tape at the size that you think you want your picture to be. Sit down and see if you can easily see the entire rectangle in your field of vision. If not, you need to either move your seats farther away or make the rectangle smaller. Don't worry about aspect ratios or about the brightness of the projector at this stage of your planning. This is simply to get an idea of what the maximum comfortable image size is for your projection room
  • Determine the minimum distance you should sit from the screen based on the resolution of your projector. For a 720p projector, you want to sit about 1.5 times the screen width away so that you don't see the individual pixels, about 1.2 times the screen width for a 1080p projector. Film projectors have an even higher effective resolution, so you could theoretically sit closer without noticing the film grain. Lower resolution projectors might require a smaller screen size
  • Place your projector in the back of the room, turn it on, and move it forward until the lighted image fits the area you have marked out. If it isn't bright enough, you'll need to move it closer to the projection surface to concentrate the light. Try watching some content on the projector, to see if you're comfortable with the brightness and your distance from the screen as you've marked it out. If so, then mark that spot as the place to set projector. If not, adjust your masking tape rectangle and try a new configuration
